Learning strategies & the 50/50 method

How long does it take to learn Dutch to B1 level?

From absolute beginner to B1, the level at which you can hold your own in conversations at work and in daily life, typically takes several hundred study hours. How fast you get there depends on your mother tongue, your learning method, and, above all, your consistency. Here is a realistic timeline.

B1 is the goal for most learners: at this CEFR level you understand the main points of conversations about work and daily life, you manage in most situations, and you can explain opinions and plans. B1 is also the common benchmark for formal goals such as the Dutch civic-integration and state exams.

A realistic timeline

Language institutes and international guidelines work with roughly several hundred guided and self-study hours to grow from zero to B1. In our experience: learners who spend a serious 4 to 6 hours per week on the language typically reach B1 within 8 to 12 months. With a more intensive rhythm it can be faster; with one weekly lesson and no self-study it takes considerably longer.

What determines your pace?

  • Your mother tongue: if you already speak a Germanic language (English, German), you will recognise many words and structures and progress faster.

  • Contact hours with real speaking time: you learn a language by speaking it. One-on-one lessons deliver far more active speaking time per hour than group classes.

  • Consistency: thirty minutes five times a week beats one marathon session at the weekend. That is why half of our formula is self-study via app and book.

  • Using it immediately: learners who dare to speak Dutch at work or with neighbours anchor what they learn many times faster.

How our programmes match this

In an individual programme, we establish your exact starting level during the intake and map the shortest route to your goal. Moving from A1 to A2 often goes surprisingly fast. However, the step from A2 to B1, which is the phase where you permanently overcome the hesitation to speak, takes the most practice. It benefits greatly from personal guidance by a certified trainer who understands the specific pitfalls of your mother tongue.
